Bathing Recommendations for Inpatients with Scheduled OR Procedure

Review Bathing Recommendations for Reducing Central Line Associated Bloodstream and Surgical Site Infections Job Aid for a list of CHG contraindications, age exceptions (37-48 wks) and alternate bathing products.

Night Prior for
All Procedures
  • Soap and water bath/shower
  • and
  • A CHG treatment within 1 hr of bath, or approved alternative, if required in list below
  • and
  • Surgery on the head or neck (not involving mucous membranes) shampoo or
    no-rinse shampoo spray to hair
  • Clean bed linens and gown
Procedures That Require CHG on Night Prior and
Day of Procedure
  • All neurosurgery
  • Spinal fusions
  • Growing rods, VEPTR
    • Placement, expansions, revisions
  • Endo prosthetics
    • Placement, revisions
  • Total joint replacements
  • Tissue expanders
    • Placement, revisions
  • Craniofacial surgery with hardware
  • Breast procedures
  • Central line insertion
  • Vascular surgeries
    • Vascular bypass, vascular trauma, popliteal artery entrapment release, median arcuate ligament release
  • NUSS procedures
Night Prior to Procedure
  • Soap and water bath/shower
  • and
  • A CHG treatment, or approved alternative, if required in list above
  • and
  • Surgery on the head or neck (not involving mucous membranes) shampoo or
    no-rinse shampoo spray to hair
  • Clean bed linens and gown
Day of All Procedures
  • Second CHG treatment as indicated
  • Add-ons
    • Aim to complete CHG treatment by 6 a.m. or once identified as an add on
  • ED
    • Discuss with PACU charge RN appropriate location for bathing based on patient status and OR availability
  • Remove
    • Jewelry
    • Piercings
    • Home undergarments
    • Contact lenses
    • False eyelashes
  • Tampons are not permitted, menstruating females can wear a maxi pad with disposable underwear
  • Pull hair away from the face, remove metal hair accessories
Refrain from Use
After Bathing
  • Alcohol-based hair or skin products
  • Deodorant when axilla will be in sterile field
  • Lotions
  • Emollients
  • Cosmetics
