Prevention Methods and Guidance

Immunization
  • HPV
  • Hepatitis B
Barrier Use
  • Condom – male and female
  • Dental Dam
  • Use of water based or silicone lubricant
    • Oil-based associated with reduced condom integrity
Prophylaxis
  • Pre-exposure Prophylaxis for HIV and STI
  • Post-exposure Prophylaxis for HIV and STI
HIV Treatment
  • Treatment with antiretrovirals of persons w/HIV to prevent spread
Sexual Behavior
  • Limiting sexual partners
  • Testing prior to sexual activity with new partner
Screening
  • Routine screening for STI, annually or more
  • Early testing if symptoms of possible STI
Emergency Contraception
  • Ella, Ulipristal acetate 30 mg tablet once
    • Weight ≥ 75 kg or BMI ≥ 25 or within 3-5 days (72-120 hrs) of intercourse
  • Note
    • Repeat pregnancy test 2 wks after treatment
    • Consider prescribing ondansetron along with EC
    • Provide written and verbal information to teen offered Pregnancy Prophylaxis
