Orthopedic Team Preoperative Evaluation

Components of Orthopedic Evaluation

The standard preoperative workup includes imaging, laboratory, and patient teaching. Once surgery is scheduled, each adolescent will be pre-assigned to an ARC NP for pre-anesthesia evaluation review.

Imaging
  • Full spine MRI as soon as possible (surgeon discretion if not needed)
    • If Anesthesia required, ARC evaluation required before MRI and surgery.
    • MRIs requiring General Anesthesia must be performed at PHL campus. If within 14 days of surgery, may have preoperative labs drawn concurrently.
  • If obtained > 6 mos before surgery, repeat:
    • X-ray AP/LAT scoliosis:
      • Standing/weight bearing (preferred)
      • Seated
      • Supine
      • Flexibility images over bolster or stand bending
Laboratory Testing
Ordered by Orthopedics, completed by ARC
Preprocedural Standard Labs by Surgical Service
Patient Teaching
  • Provide family with surgeon education booklet
  • Hydration recommended in adolescent who can tolerate increased fluids based on medical status
    • Day before surgery:
      • Drink or via GT: 32 oz of clear electrolyte sports drink or Pedialyte®
    • 3 hours before arrival at hospital:
