Status Epilepticus Clinical Pathway — ED, Inpatient and ICU

Status Epilepticus Definition

This pathway recommends treatment for patients > 2 months of age with Status Epilepticus defined as:

  • Ongoing seizure > 5 minutes.
  • Recurrent seizures without return to baseline mental status.

Care must be individualized based on patient characteristics, seizure characteristics, and medication risks. In particular, the five-minute operational definition may be most appropriate for patients with generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and slightly slower escalation may be warranted for patients with focal seizures.
