Environmental Modifications

Some children avoid certain sensations that are uncomfortable for them. If the child is known to the office, assess the need for environmental modification before arrival to reduce sensory sensitivities for the child.

Some of the more common sensitivities (and adjustments that can be made) include:

Sensitivities Adjustments
Medical Setting
  • Exam room alternative.
  • Entrance through alternate door to limit exposure to waiting area, assessment room and medical staff.
Too Many People
  • Assign rooms in quieter corners of office.
  • Offer first or last appointment of the day/session, or when office is less busy.
  • Streamline the number of staff contacts.
  • Minimize number of staff members in the room.
  • Schedule a consistent contact person on medical staff or Child Life.
Fluorescent/Overhead Lights
  • Turn off/dim lights
  • Allow sunglasses or baseball cap
  • Use exam room with natural light
Loud Noises
  • Ear plugs or noise-cancelling headphones
  • Calming music
  • White noise machine
Too Many Instructions
