Child with Suspected Septic Arthritis

This pathway is to be used for children, who have no known trauma, who exhibit one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Significant joint pain with or without swelling
  • Significant limp or refusal to bear weight
  • Fever (absence of fever does not rule out septic arthritis or osteomyelitis)

Exclusion Criteria

  • Immunocompromised state
  • Known Rheumatologic Disease
  • Recent orthopedic procedure involving affected joint
  • Prosthesis
  • Penetrating injuries
  • Age < 56 days
