Post-discharge Management

Appointment/Timing Goals at Appointment
First Visit
7-10 days post-discharge
  • VS, PE, weight check
  • Testing
    • CXR
    • Echocardiogram, if needed to visualize coronary flow
    • No echocardiogram if post-op reassuring
  • Medications
    • Lasix discontinued
  • Feeding
    • All patients should be seen by an outpatient dietitian — view discharge instructions as per nutrition pathway
Second Visit
6-8 wks post-discharge
  • EKG
  • Echocardiogram only if murmur or prior dysfunction/concerns
  • Referral for Cardiac Kids Developmental Follow-up Program if not done before discharge
Third Visit
4-6 mos post-discharge
  • EKG
  • Echocardiogram
Fourth Visit
1 yr
Echocardiogram
Annual Visits Thereafter
If competitive athlete 10-14 yrs of age
  • Exercise test with perfusion imaging
  • Consider angiography or other coronary artery perfusion study
