Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) Clinical Pathway — ICU

Evaluation/Treatment for Neonates at Risk for
Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE)

This pathway provides guidance for identifying neonates symptomatic at or near the time of birth from hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) who may be eligible for neuroprotective care.

Goal

Determine eligibility for treatment, transfer neonate to tertiary facility
Initiate cooling within 6 hrs of life
Referring institutions should begin passive cooling as clinically indicated
Guidance for Initial Care Prior to Transport

Exclusions

No plans for further intensive care interventions
< 35 wks gestation
