Trauma Resuscitation Clinical Pathway — Emergency Department

Care for Vascular Injuries

Any decision to divert/transfer a patient away from CHOP must be discussed with the Trauma Attending.
Upper extremity vascular injuries
  • CHOP Hand service handles all upper extremity vascular injuries.
  • If single limb injury-related (eg. supracondylar fracture with vascular compression) you may only need Ortho to be involved. Can be admitted to Orthopedics service.
  • If multi-injury patient (eg. car accident with associated head and torso injuries) trauma must also be involved. Should be admitted to trauma service.
Lower extremity vascular injuries
  • Trauma is the initial contact for these patients. The Trauma Fellow/Attending will contact the appropriate Vascular Surgeon (Vasc LE Trauma Cnslt).
  • Trauma attending should be involved in all decisions to divert/transfer patients away from CHOP.
Torso/Neck vascular injuries
  • CHOP Trauma can handle all torso/neck vascular injuries and may bring in CT surgery as necessary.
  • Trauma is the primary contact.
