Trauma Resuscitation Clinical Pathway — Emergency Department
Exposure, Maintain Normothermia
Goal
Remove all clothing immediately upon arrival and maintain normothermia (36°C- 37.5°C) in the patient.
Interventions
- Maintain Trauma Room Temperature to 80°F at all times
- Rapidly obtain core temperature measurement per ED Nursing Vital Signs Procedure
- Apply warm blankets as soon as possible considering patient exam and procedural needs
- Warm fluids and blood products
- Options for active fluid warming include Belmont Rapid Infuser and Hot Line
- Consult with providers to determine need for active rewarming in the hypothermic patient, considering:
- Overhead heat lamps, Cincinnati Sub-Zero Blanketrol III or Baer Hugger
- Consult PICU/PCU Thermoregulation Pathway for Acute Neurologic Injury for reference
- Continuous temperature monitoring required.
- Utilize rectal, esophageal probes or temperature sensing Foley (obtained from PICU)
