Adolescent with Suspected Acute Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

This pathway guides the care of adolescents with episodes of heavy or frequent, irregular menstrual bleeding that requires evaluation/intervention to identify the cause and to prevent further blood loss.

Definition of Abnormal Uterine Bleeding (AUB)

Normal Abnormal
Cycle Cycle occurs 21-45 days apart
  • < 21 days
  • > 45 days
  • Intermenstrual bleeding
  • Post-coital bleeding
Duration < 7 days ≥ 7 days
Flow 30 mL/cycle
  • 80 mL/cycle
  • Passage of clots > 2.5 cm (quarter-sized)
  • Subjective impression that flow is heavier than normal
    • Flooding
    • Soaking > 6 pads and/or tampons daily
    • Changing a soaked product (tampon/pads) every 1-2 hrs
