Methods of Urine Collection

Catheterization
  • Recommended method for children < 2 months (or < 48 weeks CGA) to obtain urine for culture
Suprapubic aspirate
  • US guidance is strongly recommended
Cotton ball or bag specimen
  • Not recommended for obtaining a specimen for culture.

  1. Specimens not obtained via catheterization or SPA (cotton ball, bag, or indwelling catheter specimens) are not recommended for urine culture, but may be used for urine analysis.
