Midline Catheter Guidelines

A midline catheter is not a substitute for central venous catheter placement.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Weight > 10 kg
  • Only IV fluids and medications appropriate for peripheral access
    • Non-irritating fluids for > 72 hrs
    • PPN > 72 hrs
    • Transfusions > 48 hrs
    • Blood draws > 48 hrs
  • Anticipated duration ≤ 14 days
  • History of difficult vascular access

Exclusion Criteria

  • TPN
  • High-concentration inotropes or electrolytes (> 10% dextrose, > 600 mOsM)
  • Vesicants/irritants
  • Burns, infection, contractures, wounds, thrombus in extremity, or compromised blood flow to insertion extremity
  • Concerns for, or diagnosed chronic renal insufficiency for the purpose of vessel preservation
  • Anticipated need for repeated PICCs in the future
