Signs and Symptoms of VTE and Pulmonary Embolism

VTE
  • Pain
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Change in skin color to red or blue
  • Increased warmth to touch
Pulmonary Embolism (PE)

PE Pathway
  • Sudden shortness of breath
  • Reported anxiety, sense of "impending doom"
  • Tachycardia
  • Diaphoresis
  • Sharp chest pain that may worsen with deep breaths
  • Unexplained cough, may cough up blood or be a dry cough
  • Syncope
