Recommended Laboratory Studies

Laboratory Studies – All Patients
  • CBC, BMP
  • Consider UA if abdominal symptoms, urine culture if UA suggestive of UTI
  • CSF cytochemical analysis (cell count, glucose, and protein) and bacterial culture – obtained before giving antibiotics
  • Other labs, as indicated
OR
  • CBC, PT/PTT, BMP
  • Type and screen required only for:
    • Infants < 1 year
    • Coagulopathy
    • Non-peritoneal (i.e., vascular, pleural) shunt
    • High risk for transfusion
  • Other labs, as clinically indicated
Urine/Serum HCG
  • All postpubertal females
  • All females ≥ 12 years
Concern for Infection
  • C-reactive protein
  • Blood culture
