Learn more about the General Diagnostic Gastroenterology (GI) Program

What is esophagitis?

Esophagitis is a general term for inflammation of the lining of the esophagus. There are many causes of esophagitis, including medications, infections, allergies, reflux and inflammatory conditions.

The evaluation of esophagitis may include a trial of medication and/or a camera test (upper endoscopy). Treatment of esophagitis depends on the cause of the inflammation.

At The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, children with esophagitis are treated by experienced gastroenterologists in the Division of Gastroenterology (GI), Hepatology and Nutrition.
