Fran Balamuth, MD, PhD

Fran Balamuth, MD, PhD, is an attending physician and the Associate Director of Research in the Emergency Department, Co-Director of the Center for Sepsis Excellence, and a faculty member in the Center for Pediatric Clinical Effectiveness at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Locations: Main Campus
Appointments and Referrals: 1-800-TRY-CHOP (1-800-879-2467)

Background

Fran Balamuth, MD, PhD, is an assistant professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania, an attending physician in the Division of Emergency Medicine, and a core faculty member at the Center for Pediatric Clinical Effectiveness at CHOP. Dr. Balamuth attended medical school at Yale University School of Medicine and holds a PhD in immunobiology from Yale and a Master of Science and Clinical Epidemiology (MSCE) from the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Balamuth has been a key institutional leader in pediatric sepsis and is a rising national leader in pediatric sepsis recognition and care. She has played a key role in developing and implementing a clinical practice guideline to care for patients with suspected sepsis at CHOP. She has also worked collaboratively with sepsis leaders throughout the institution to create a comprehensive prospective registry for patients with suspected sepsis, which allows us to track sepsis epidemiology and outcomes at CHOP. Dr. Balamuth currently sits on the steering committee for the American Association of Pediatrics Sepsis Quality Improvement Collaborative and the national task force for the development of pediatric sepsis guidelines through the Society for Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Balamuth recently completed a K12 award from NHLBI studying sepsis recognition in the emergency department using both epidemiologic and translational approaches. She has been awarded a K23 from NICHD to study RNA expression profiling in pediatric sepsis recognition.
