Jan P. Boswinkel, MD, is Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's Middleman Family Pavilion in King of Prussia and Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Boswinkel has been involved in the planning process for the Middleman Family Pavilion since its inception, and led the multidisciplinary team that prepared for the opening of the hospital. As Chief Operating Officer of the Middleman Family Pavilion, he is responsible for designing and overseeing processes and systems that reflect CHOP’s mission and values and are tailored to meet the needs of children and families in the local community.
Dr. Boswinkel has been with CHOP since 2001, and has held several leadership roles at the hospital. As Chief Safety Officer, he led the hospital‘s patient safety initiatives and was responsible for several clinical-operational services. Under his leadership, CHOP achieved substantial improvement in a broad range of safety outcomes and created a robust culture of safety. This transformative work focused on embedding the principles and practices of safety and high reliability into the hospital’s daily operations, ensuring that the improvements will be sustained for the long term. As Vice President of Medical Operations, Dr. Boswinkel partnered with other leaders to develop and implement operational systems, structures and roles that greatly enhanced CHOP’s ability to anticipate and respond to clinical-operational challenges such as weather events and high patient volumes. Dr. Boswinkel also led the clinical planning work for several major building projects, including CHOP KOPH and the New Patient Pavilion on CHOP’s Philadelphia Campus, which is scheduled to open in 2028.
Dr. Boswinkel is a practicing board-certified pediatric hospitalist, and previously served as Section Chief of Inpatient Services in CHOP‘s Division of General Pediatrics and in other leadership roles in the Department of Pediatrics, including on the department’s Executive Committee. He also founded CHOP’s Pediatric Sedation Service and served as its medical director from 2004 to 2011.
Dr. Boswinkel earned his medical degree at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, and completed his residency in Pediatrics at CHOP. Prior to his medical career, Dr. Boswinkel was a Vice President of Cross Markets Proprietary Trading at J.P. Morgan, where he worked for nine years in London and New York.
