About Herodes Guzman, MD, MPH, MSCE
Herodes Guzman, MD, MPH, MSCE, received his medical degree at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine and also received a master’s degree in public health from the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. He completed his categorical pediatrics residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), which included an Advanced Skills Program in clinical research.
During his five-year combined fellowship program in clinical genetics, medical biochemical genetics and pediatric endocrinology at CHOP, he dedicated his clinical efforts to rare endocrine diseases, including hyperinsulinism. His research during the fellowship included better characterizing the epidemiology of mitochondrial diabetes within a cohort of patients with genotype-confirmed primary mitochondrial disease and the use of CHOP’s Hyperinsulinism Registry to identify and attempt to understand why certain patients with hyperinsulinism are not diagnosed at birth. His work was supported by an ACMG Foundation Next Generation Medical Biochemical Award and a National Institute of General Medical Sciences T32 Training Grant.
He will complete a master of science in clinical epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania in August 2026. He is also completing the one-year CHOP Cell and Gene Therapy Clinical Training Program to facilitate research into gene therapy for rare endocrine diseases. He will be dual appointed as an assistant professor in clinical pediatrics within the Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes and the Division of Genetic and Genomic Medicine, joining the team at CHOP’s Congenital Hyperinsulinism Center in September 2026.
Dr. Guzman aims to spearhead clinical care in endocrinopathy-associated rare diseases, including ongoing collaborations in clinical research focused on optimizing the care of patients with inborn errors of carbohydrate metabolism like hyperinsulinism, glycogen storage disorders and primary mitochondrial disease.
