Essential Newborn Care 1 (ENC 1), second edition, is the first part of WHO’s Essential Newborn Care Course. It provides participants with neonatal resuscitation skills and prepares them to train others in the initial steps of neonatal resuscitation. The curriculum, which focuses on “The Golden Minute” after birth, is specifically designed for low-resource environments and has been shown to significantly reduce neonatal mortality and fresh stillbirths. It includes newborn resuscitation within the Golden Minute, keeping babies warm, promoting exclusive breastfeeding, preventing infection, treating mother and baby with respect, and keeping records to help provide the best care. This course was created as a collaboration between the World Health Organization and the American Academy of Pediatrics, as an update to Helping Babies Breathe.
