Meningitis B: Emily’s Story

Meningitis B: Emily’s Story

Alicia Stillman’s daughter, Emily, was only 19 when she lost her life to meningococcal meningitis. She talked with the Vaccine Education Center about her family’s experience, recalling how Emily’s symptoms quickly progressed from headache and achiness to hospitalization on life support in less than 24 hours. Emily was diagnosed with meningococcal type B meningitis, a disease that can claim a life in a matter of hours. When Emily died, there wasn’t a vaccine to prevent meningococcal type B in the United States, but today, there is.

Alicia is the Director and Co-founder of the Emily Stillman Foundation and the Co-founder of the Meningitis B Action Project.
