Celebrating National Volunteer Appreciation Week

What do a NICU nurse, adolescent medicine doctor, occupational therapy student, surgical coordinator, clinical research assistant, art teacher, dentist, university student, human resources coordinator, enterprise improvement adviser, CHOP Foundation associate director and pediatric resident have in common? They all volunteer with CHOP’s Homeless Health Initiative (HHI) – and you can too! news-celebrating-national-volunteer-appreciation-week CHOP HHI volunteers and families at SPARK Jane Addams Place

Since 1988, HHI volunteers have provided high quality, compassionate medical and dental care, connections with primary and specialty care providers, and wellness promotion to families living in local homeless shelters. In honor of National Volunteer Appreciation Week, HHI wants to recognize the tens of thousands of hours our clinical and nonclinical volunteers have poured into our local communities.

Families experiencing homelessness in Philadelphia, surrounding Pennsylvania counties and Ewing, N.J., benefit from the expertise of clinical volunteers during CHOP Night clinics and health education workshops and from the care of nonclinical volunteers who provide a trauma-informed space for children to play safely at SPARK (Safe Physical Activity & Recreation for Kids). Our volunteers describe the valuable connections to families they experience during their time with HHI and the invaluable learning opportunities the families offer them. During high patient census and demanding workloads throughout the institution, HHI volunteers told us they felt energized by their service to the community. As a wise person once said, “Those who can, do. Those who can do more, volunteer.”

If you would like to join a team of caring and fun-loving people who are making a difference in the lives of families experiencing homelessness in our local community, email the HHI team now!
