Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) hosted the Cure Sickle Cell Walk & Family Fun Day presented by West Pharmaceutical Services on Saturday, June7. It was a morning of walking, cheering and celebrating sickle cell warriors and their families at Citizens Bank Park. The event, which included a ceremonial walk to honor those with sickle cell disease, along with fun activities for the whole family, raised more than $242,000 for sickle cell disease research and patient care.

CHOP has a large and comprehensive sickle cell program that offers all the specialty services children with sickle cell disease need. These services include newborn screenings, transfusions, 24-hour access to a hematologist, pulmonary and cerebrovascular care, psychosocial services, and the Hematology Acute Care Unit.

CHOP Sickle Cell Research Landmarks:

  • For nearly two decades, CHOP has spearheaded the treatment of sickle cell disease and played a critical role in the clinical trials that led to the historic FDA approvals of two gene therapies in December 2023.
  • CHOP was the first to identify the neuroradiologic findings in children with sickle cell disease and stroke, and to describe safe and effective use of transfusion therapy for the prevention of recurrent stroke.
  • CHOP discovered novel red cell enzymes and factors regulating globin gene regulation and hemoglobin stability, key to advances in gene therapy.
