Inclusion Criteria

Children ≥ 12 months seen in primary care.

Developmental surveillance should occur at every primary care visit.

Goals of autism screening:

  • Early identification
  • Early initiation of developmental and behavioral therapies

Components of developmental surveillance:

  • Asking about developmental/behavioral concerns
  • Informal observation
  • Monitoring of symptoms in the context of routine health supervision

Using formal developmental screening tools at periodic indicated intervals will increase accuracy.
