Interpreting Screening Results

Pass

Child's responses are judged to be clinically reliable at least 2 out of 3 times at the criterion decibel level at each test frequency (Hz) in each ear.

Example of Overall Screening result for patient under 11 years: Pass

  • 1000 Hz: Left: 20 dB HL Pass, Right: 20 dB HL Pass
  • 2000 Hz: Left: 20 dB HL Pass, Right: 20 dB HL Pass
  • 4000 Hz: Left: 20 dB HL Pass, Right: 20 dB HL Pass
  • Comments: cooperative with assessment

Fail

Child's responses are judged to be clinically reliable and child does not respond at least 2 out of 3 times at the criterion decibel level at any one or more frequencies (Hz) in either ear.

Example of Overall Screening result for patient over 11 years: Fail

  • 1000 Hz: Left: 20 dB HL Pass, Right: 20 dB HL Pass
  • 2000 Hz: Left: 20 dB HL Pass, Right: 20 dB HL Pass
  • 4000 Hz: Left: 20 dB HL Pass, Right: 20 dB HL Pass
  • 6000 Hz: Left: 20 dB HL Pass, Right: 20 dB HL Fail
  • 8000 Hz: Left: 20 dB HL Pass, Right: 20 dB HL Pass
  • Comments: cooperative with assessment

Could not test (CNT)

Child was uncooperative for testing or did not understand task.

Make descriptive note in chart about why the child could not be tested to help physician determine the most appropriate follow-up recommendation.
