Infant Driven Feeding (Cue-based Feeding)
A skilled approach to oral feeding (via breast or bottle) that relies on clinical decision-making to achieve a safe, functional, nurturing and developmentally appropriate feeding experience without focus on the quantity consumed.
Infant determines amount, frequency, and length of feeding based on Infant Driven Feeding.
- Waking for scheduled feeds
- Rooting
- Sucking on pacifier
- Mouthing hands
Feeding stress cues (signs to stop feeding):
- Change in state (crying, falling asleep)
- Pulling off nipple
- No root or suck on nipple
- Coughing, wet breath sounds or congestion
- Increased work of breath/change in vital signs
