Infant Driven Feeding (Cue-based Feeding)

A skilled approach to oral feeding (via breast or bottle) that relies on clinical decision-making to achieve a safe, functional, nurturing and developmentally appropriate feeding experience without focus on the quantity consumed.

Infant determines amount, frequency, and length of feeding based on Infant Driven Feeding.

  • Waking for scheduled feeds
  • Rooting
  • Sucking on pacifier
  • Mouthing hands

Feeding stress cues (signs to stop feeding):

  • Change in state (crying, falling asleep)
  • Pulling off nipple
  • No root or suck on nipple
  • Coughing, wet breath sounds or congestion
  • Increased work of breath/change in vital signs
