Sepsis Clinical Pathway — Emergency Department, Inpatient and PICU
Epic Sepsis Alert
The sepsis BPA is an automated system built into epic to monitor patients who may become septic. The sepsis BPA will fire on your patient if two out of the three following criteria are met: fever or hypothermia, hypotension, or a sustained change in respiratory rate. When the sepsis BPA fires, document additional neuro and capillary refill assessments within the sepsis navigator. If a huddle is recommended, alert the critical care team via the nurse call system. Complete the sepsis huddle documentation located within the sepsis navigator.

If the BPA recommends a huddle, use the Sepsis Alert button on the nurse call system to alert the critical care team to huddle at bedside. A text page will be sent to their phones to alert them to come to bedside. The huddle should include at minimum the critical care fellow or NP, charge nurse, and bedside nurse. Fill out the huddle section with the team to determine the best plan of care for the patient. Once the team huddles, deselect the button on the wall to stop the alerts. ![]()
