Toxic Ingestion Clinical Pathway — Emergency Department, ICU and Inpatient

Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) Consultation

Social work consultation is an appropriate first step when child protection concerns arise.

Discussion regarding need for SCAN consultation is indicated for children and pre-adolescents with a clinical presentation that meets criteria for HUP Expanded Urine Testing (HUP Drug Analysis Pain Management Panel (DAPM) and/or HUP Comprehensive (Expanded Pharmaceuticals) Urine Drug Screen), without definitive alternative cause.

SCAN team is available to guide additional child protection diagnostic testing, as indicated.

Adolescents and pre-adolescents with ingestions in the setting of behavioral health concerns would benefit instead from social work and behavioral health consultation.
