Upper Gastrointestinal Bleed — Goals and Metrics — Clinical Pathway: Emergency Department, ICU and Inpatient

Upper Gastrointestinal Bleed Clinical Pathway — Emergency Department, ICU and Inpatient

Goals

  • Standardize the management of children that present with suspected upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB)
  • Decrease morbidity and mortality related to UGIB
  • Risk stratify children that may benefit from endoscopic intervention and identify etiology of UGIB

Metrics

  • Time from ED arrival to assessment of hemodynamic status
  • Time from ED arrival to reassessment of hemodynamic status after resuscitation with crystalloid or blood products
  • Length of hospital stay:
    • LOS for all children admitted with UGIB
  • Time from initial encounter to intervention for children meeting clinical and laboratory threshold (endoscopy, interventional radiology, and surgery)
  • Complications following UGIB and rate of rebleed
