Orthopedic Team Preoperative Preparation

Diagnostics
  • Baseline X-rays (Sankar series)
    • Standing AP pelvis false profile and Dunn lateral view
  • MRI if concerns for coexisting soft tissue injury
  • CT if clinically indicated for preoperative planning and/or diagnosis
  • CBC no diff, PTT, PT/INR
    • Consider preoperative autologous blood donation for young adults who meet Red Cross Criteria
      • To be completed 25-30 days before surgical procedure
Patient Teaching
  • Occurs during orthopedic preoperative visit
  • Review details of surgical recovery plan
Consults
  • Physical Therapy
    • Gait training
    • Review of home exercise program
    • Ordering DME
  • Encourage subspecialist preoperative visit as indicated
Preoperative Hydration
  • Drink 32 oz of clear electrolyte sports drink the day before surgery
  • Drink 8 oz clear electrolyte sports drink up to arrival at the hospital
