History and Physical

History
  • Fever, other systemic symptoms
  • Location of abscess(es)
  • Duration of lesion
  • Spontaneous drainage
  • Rapidity of spread
  • Previous history of pustule, abscess
  • Family history of abscess or MRSA
  • Family member with workplace environment of healthcare
  • Breach in skin barrier:
    • Abrasion
    • Insect bite, etc.
    • Primary dermatologic condition
  • Concern for possible foreign body
  • Infection due to animal bite
Physical
  • Assess vital signs, pain
  • Location, size of lesion (measure, outline, photograph)
  • Induration, swelling, fluctuance, erythema
  • Spontaneous drainage
  • Regional adenopathy
  • Rash
