Donate Books to Reach Out and Read

New books

CHOP’s Reach Out and Read program coordinator purchases the brand-new infant, toddler and preschool books we need at a 60% discount, so we greatly appreciate monetary donations, as they make the greatest impact. Your generosity will allow the primary care pediatricians and nurse practitioners at CHOP’s 27 Reach Out and Read sites to give 80,000 brand-new, age-appropriate books to young children during their primary care well visits and talk with parents about the joys and importance of reading aloud and language development.

We are always in great need of brand-new board books for infants and toddlers (6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 24 and 30 months old). CHOP’s Reach Out and Read program coordinator can purchase the books we need at a 60% discount, so we greatly appreciate monetary donations, as they make the greatest impact.

Gently-used books

Due to COVID-19, there are changes about how and where we can receive donations of children’s books for CHOP’s Reach Out and Read program. Please email reachoutandread@email.chop.edu or call 215-590-5989 and press 1 to request the most recent guidelines.

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia’s Reach Out and Read program accepts donations of gently used books for children and adolescents, so the primary care staff can promote literacy to more children, teens and families and give them books to take home, keep and enjoy. More than 200,000 appropriate gently used books for children and adolescents are needed to distribute each year, especially for children ages newborn to 10 years.

Used books should be gently used (covers and pages intact, clean, readable, without odor). Books with sensitive issues and/or illustrations (such as abuse, death, divorce, holidays, religion, violence and weapons) cannot be distributed at these Reach Out and Read sites. Also, we are not able to accept audio/sound books as the button battery is a safety hazard.
