Donate Books to Reach Out and Read
Your generosity will allow the primary care pediatricians and nurse practitioners at CHOP’s 27 Reach Out and Read sites to give 80,000 brand-new, age-appropriate books to young children during their primary care well visits and talk with parents about the joys and importance of reading aloud and language development. If you choose to purchase or collect new books instead of donating funds for CHOP to purchase the books, attached is a short recommended title list. Reach Out and Read will accept similar books that are not on the list.
We are always in great need of brand-new board books for infants and toddlers (6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 24 and 30 months old). CHOP’s Reach Out and Read program coordinator can purchase the books we need at a 60% discount, so we greatly appreciate monetary donations, as they make the greatest impact.

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia’s Reach Out and Read sites accept donations of gently used books for children and adolescents, so the healthcare staff can promote literacy to more children, teens and families and give them books to take home, keep and enjoy. More than 200,000 appropriate gently used books for children and adolescents are needed to distribute each year, especially for children ages newborn to 10 years.
Used books should be gently used (covers and pages intact, clean, readable, without odor). Books with sensitive issues and/or illustrations (such as abuse, death, divorce, holidays, religion, violence and weapons) cannot be distributed at these Reach Out and Read sites. Also, we are not able to accept audio/sound books as the button battery is a safety hazard.
How to deliver books
CHOP’s Reach Out and Read program associate can pick up your donation of children’s books within 60 miles of West Philadelphia as long as:
- The program associate can give a brief presentation about the program to your group and thank them
- You can have someone load your boxes into the colorful Reach Out and Read cargo van (you can take photos too). Please call 215-590-5989 and select option 3 for more information and to schedule. CHOP is unable to pay for mailing/shipping cost. If you would like to pay for and mail your donation of books, please call 215-590-5989 and select option 1 to receive appropriate address.
If you plan to deliver your donation of children’s books, please call 215-590-5989 and select option 1 to state number of boxes and determine delivery location (one to three weeks advance notice is very helpful). Depending on the size of your donation the delivery destination may vary. Please mark the box of books with “Reach Out and Read.” Books for Reach Out and Read cannot be delivered to CHOP Main Campus (3401/3500/3501 Civic Center Blvd., W. Phila).
The Reach Out and Read coordinator will mail a thank you letter to the donor(s), so please call 215-590-5989 and select option 1 to give the Reach Out and Read coordinator the donor’s name and mailing address.
