Community and Advocacy
Our responsibility to children and families doesn’t end at the front doors of the facilities where we provide care. CHOP offers a breakthrough model of pediatric care that goes beyond medical services to address social factors that impact health — early literacy, safe housing, violence prevention, asthma control, nutrition and more. With your support, we will transform the health and well-being of children here and in developing nations.
In this video, learn more about how CHOP is creating better lives for children in communities that are often overlooked and underserved, in our own backyard and around the globe.
What We Can Accomplish Together
Your support through this campaign will empower CHOP to help more children and families in more communities — not just locally, but globally.
Why Give Now?
With your support, we will raise $50 million to support health advocacy and outreach for children. Although CHOP is best known for clinical breakthroughs, we have focused on community health needs since our founding. These efforts depend directly on the generosity of CHOP supporters.

In participating schools, a trip to the nurse’s office can connect students to CHOP doctors without having to leave school. In February 2018, thanks to support provided by United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey, CHOP rolled out the school telehealth program. It is currently being piloted in 3 schools in the Norristown Area School District and CHOP hopes to expand to serve all 12 schools in the School District for the 2018 – 2019 school year.
The program has benefits beyond parents’ convenience and peace of mind. For children without family physicians or transportation to get to a primary care provider, the program offers the potential to improve access to routine care. It also seeks to improve chronic disease management and increase the chance of detecting a health issue earlier, with the goal of ultimately improving outcomes and overall health.
It also empowers school nurses to meet more student health needs.
“School nurses are the only healthcare provider our schools have, so the telehealth pilot with CHOP has been a great opportunity for us to work with other medical professionals to provide the best possible care for our students,” says Eileen McKeron, RN, MEd, CSN, a school nurse at a participating school. “We’ve been able to interact with the doctor on call to determine the best treatment for the students’ symptoms.”
