Advanced Skills Program

Advanced Skills Program

The Pediatrics Residency Program has developed an optional learning opportunity that allows residents to enhance their understanding and skills in a subset of academic areas. We think of Advanced Skills in the same way that a college student might consider selecting a “minor” in a field related (or unrelated) to their “major.” These optional curricula are flexible and can be incorporated into residency training in the PL2 and PL3 years. This program capitalizes on faculty expertise and enthusiasm to offer a structured but flexible variety of experiences that include mentoring sessions, apprenticeship/observership, guided reading and discussion, as well as hands-on projects.

Residents are recognized at graduation for their enhanced studies in one of the nine skill domains:

  1. Clinical Research
  2. Medical Education
  3. Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS)
  4. Quality Improvement, Patient Safety, and Operations
  5. Podcasting and Social Media
