Why Choose the Fetal Heart Program

Why Choose the Fetal Heart Program

The Fetal Heart Program at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is one of the largest and most experienced fetal heart programs in the world. We specialize in the most rare and complex fetal heart conditions. From state-of-the-art diagnostics to the most advanced treatment options available, we offer every resource you and your family will need – from diagnosis to delivery and beyond.

Cutting-edge technology

Our expert team performs nearly 4,000 fetal echocardiograms (a special heart ultrasound for unborn babies) each year. Diagnosing congenital heart disease early can lead to better outcomes. We are one of very few cardiac programs with the advanced skill and technology to perform early fetal cardiovascular imaging (EFCI) as early as 12 weeks’ gestation. We use state-of-the-art imaging technology to ensure a correct diagnosis and the best treatment approach. Our program offers expectant parents the most advanced and innovative fetal treatments available, with personalized care designed to meet your baby’s unique needs. You can trust that you and your baby are getting the best possible care anywhere.

A team approach to care

You and your baby will be cared for by a dedicated team of specialists – world-leading fetal cardiologists and compassionate, highly skilled fetal heart nurse coordinators who will support your family from your first appointment through your baby’s delivery. Our team of experts also includes pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists, nurses and a social worker, as well as CHOP's maternal-fetal medicine specialists and genetic counselors. Each member of our team has been specially trained to care for fetuses and their mothers. We’ll also stay in close contact with your obstetrician/gynecologist (OB/GYN) to plan the best delivery options for your baby.

State-of-the-art facilities

We partner with CHOP’s Richard D. Wood Jr. Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment (CFDT), which is known around the world for innovative fetal surgery and therapy. If your baby is critically ill and needs specialized monitoring and care, we may recommend that you deliver in the CFDT’s Garbose Family Special Delivery Unit (SDU). The SDU is the world's first birth facility for mothers carrying babies diagnosed with birth defects. Delivering your baby at CHOP provides seamless prenatal, delivery room and newborn care. Your baby will receive the highest level of care from the moment they are born and will stay close to you after delivery.

The full spectrum of care

The Fetal Heart Program is part of CHOP’s renowned Cardiac Center, which leads the world in pediatric heart surgery, interventional cardiology and long-term follow-up, with outcomes among the best in the world.
