Garbose Family Special Delivery Unit
Please allow for extra travel time to your appointments due to road closures and traffic congestion caused by multiple construction projects around CHOP and Penn, including the full closure of the Wood Center, long-term traffic pattern changes on University Ave., and more. Please check traffic before you go to see if there are any additional closures or impacts in the area, and refer here for the latest updates on parking at CHOP’s Philadelphia Campus.
Babies prenatally diagnosed with birth defects often require specialized care before, during and after delivery. The Garbose Family Special Delivery Unit (SDU) is the world’s first birth facility in a pediatric hospital specifically designed for healthy mothers carrying babies with known birth defects. Located within Children’s Hospital's Richard D. Wood Jr. Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment, the SDU allows moms to stay close, and babies are treated immediately. Having this comprehensive care in one location is critically important to the well-being of babies born with complex congenital conditions.
More than 14 years after opening the Garbose Family Special Delivery Unit, the world’s first birth facility exclusively for mothers carrying babies with known birth defects, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia celebrates its 5,000th delivery.
