Preparing for Your Appointment

Klinefelter Clinic appointments

Clinics for the Klinefelter Program are held on the third Monday morning of each month in the Buerger Center for Advanced Pediatric Care. After the first clinic visit, follow-up clinic visits can be scheduled at the Buerger Center or the CHOP Specialty Care & Surgery Center in King of Prussia.

Before your child’s appointment

New patients should provide a copy of the karyotype/chromosome testing showing 47,XXY (Klinefelter syndrome) or other X and Y variations before your first clinic appointment. Additional medical records, such as any recent and relevant testing results, including testosterone levels, should be sent before coming to the clinic.

What to expect during appointments

The Klinefelter Program provides assessment, treatment and guidance at each stage of the child’s development.

  • For babies who have been diagnosed prenatally (during pregnancy), we provide a consultation shortly after birth and then follow the child on an ongoing basis.
  • For toddlers and children who struggle with developmental or speech delays, we perform developmental and neurocognitive evaluations and provide referrals to early intervention or speech therapy, as needed. The program psychologist can provide additional screening for attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and the team’s social worker can assist with special school planning.
  • For adolescents who experience delayed or incomplete puberty, we monitor testosterone levels and prescribe testosterone replacement therapy as needed. We may provide referrals to other specialties according to their needs (such as plastic surgery for breast enlargement, also known as gynecomastia).
  • Young adults who are interested in fertility are referred for consultation and treatment to Penn Medicine. We also partner with Penn Medicine to coordinate the transition to adult care.

In all cases, the assessment and treatment approach are highly individualized, based on the symptoms and needs of the patient and the concerns of the family.
