What to Expect: Yoga Therapy
Your child’s medical team may order a consultation for Yoga Therapy. When that happens, one of our Certified Yoga Therapists will meet your child and introduce them to our services. The therapist will spend time getting to know your child and creating a care plan that will best support them.
Yoga sessions are tailored to the different needs and abilities of each child. Your child’s yoga practice plan will be decided together by the medical team, yoga instructor and your child and family.
A yoga session could include:
- Breathing exercises and relaxation
- Physical warm-ups
- Yoga poses, movements or stretches
- Meditation
Yoga sessions can last from 25 to 60 minutes and will vary based on the age, health, and interests of each child. The number of sessions will depend on your child’s goals, presenting symptoms, and interest level. Follow-up care is available at our outpatient clinics.
Yoga does not replace medical treatment. Please talk to your healthcare provider if you would like to learn more about CHOP’s Yoga Program or the Integrative Health Program. Our staff can help you decide if yoga might be a helpful addition to your child’s care plan.
What to expect at our Outpatient Yoga Therapy Clinic
Yoga therapy can be included as a complementary treatment to support your child's medical care and/or to support overall health and wellness. Currently, outpatient Yoga Therapy Clinic appointments are limited to patients treated by the Cancer Center.
An outpatient yoga therapy appointment includes a full intake and assessment with our Yoga Therapist. Initial appointments range from 60 to 90 minutes and include both experiential practices as well as an individualized at-home care plan. Follow-up appointments are scheduled for 60 minutes and can take place at the Buerger Center, the King of Prussia Hospital or at the Voorhees Specialty Care Center. Limited telehealth appointments may also be available for follow-up.
