What is TPN-associated cholestasis?

Total peripheral nutrition (TPN) is a form of nutrition that is provided through the veins and is used when children cannot tolerate or be fed orally.

Children who receive TPN long term may develop cholestasis, a gastrointestinal (GI) condition in which bile does not properly flow from the liver. Most cases of TPN-associated cholestasis resolve once TPN is stopped.
