The Neuroscience Center prioritizes partnered care relationships that maximize expertise, access to novel therapies, and local care. This shared care model, often initiated by an initial visit to CHOP with local neurology follow-up visits, engenders strong provider-to-provider communication and optimizes the care experience for families and their local providers. Key programs, such as our Leukodystrophy Center of Excellence, Neuroimmune, Neuromuscular (including gene therapy for rare disease such as SMA), Movement Disorders, Epilepsy Surgery and Epilepsy Neurogenetics Initiative (ENGIN) are illustrative examples.

On a local level, the CHOP EEG Lab and the Division of Neurology operate a Remote EEG Monitoring Program for six affiliate hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Units. This approach enables neonates who require EEG monitoring to remain at the affiliate hospital where they receive care from CHOP Neonatologists, thereby avoiding potential complications during transfer and enabling babies to remain close to mothers who are often still hospitalized. EEG is performed at the affiliate hospital while EEG Technologists and Neurologists at CHOP’s Philadelphia Campus provide continuous EEG assessment. Telemedicine consultation with clinicians at the affiliate hospitals and family meetings when needed are also provided.
