In late 2014, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University City District for helping to reduce methane-producing food wastes in landfills.

CHOP began composting food waste in February 2011 in the Colket Translational Research Building and composted 22.36 tons in the first year. CHOP joined EPA’s Food Recovery Challenge program in 2013. To date, the Hospital has composted a total of 303 tons of food waste.
