The Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is pleased to introduce five new attending physicians. All are available to examine pediatric patients, consult with families and work with referring physicians to determine the best therapy, treatment and long-term follow-up care.
Alyssa Baccarella, MD, MS

Dr. Baccarella was hired as an attending physician with CHOP’s Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition in August 2024. She earned a graduate degree in Health and Medical Sciences with a focus on bioinformatics, and her medical degree, both from the University of California. Before her pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition fellowship at CHOP, Dr. Baccarella completed both a pediatric internship at Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital and a pediatric residency at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital, both in New York City. She sees general GI patients and specializes in treating children with inflammatory bowel disease on CHOP’s Philadelphia campus.

Anam Bashir, MD

Dr. Bashir joined the Division in July 2024 after completing an advanced pediatric nutrition fellowship at CHOP. She earned her medical degree from Government Medical College in Srinagar, India, and served as chief resident during her pediatric residency at Charleston Area Medical Center/West Virginia University in Charleston, West Virginia. Before her advanced nutrition fellowship, Dr. Bashir also completed a pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals in Milwaukee, WI. Dr. Bashir sees both GI and Nutrition patients on CHOP’s Philadelphia campus.

Alexander Y. Coe, MD, MEd
Dr. Coe was hired as an attending physician with CHOP’s Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition in July 2024. He previously spent a year as an advanced fellow in advanced endoscopy at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and three years as a gastroenterology fellow at CHOP. He sees general gastroenterology patients and has special expertise in endoscopy as both a diagnostic and treatment tool. Dr. Coe earned a MEd in curriculum and instruction in addition to his medical degree from the University of Nevada.
Nikhil Pai, MD

Dr. Pai joined the Division in July 2024, after serving as a research fellow on obesity, metabolism and nutrition at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He earned his medical degree from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, and completed a pediatric residency at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Dr. Pai sees both GI and Nutrition patients on CHOP’s Philadelphia campus and leads a research program in nutrition and microbiome. He is investigating mechanisms on how the intestinal microbiome affects disease pathogenesis, therapeutic efficacy for patients receiving the same treatment but have different responses, and how diagnostic tools may help. Dr. Pai has a particular interest in developing microbiome-based therapeutic interventions and using nutrition to affect change in a patient’s microbiome.
Sharon Wolfson, MD

Dr. Wolfson joined the Division as an attending gastroenterologist in July 2024 after completing an advanced pediatric motility fellowship and pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition fellowship at CHOP. She earned her medical degree from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Florida and completed her residency in internal medicine-pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. Dr. Wolfson sees both general GI and motility patients on CHOP’s Philadelphia campus and at the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania.
