April 1, 2014 — The U.S. House of Representatives approved the Children’s Hospitals Graduate Medical Education (CHGME) Support Reauthorization Act of 2013. The CHGME program provides funding for the training of pediatricians at hospitals such as CHOP. This Act reauthorizes the program through fiscal year 2018.

The Senate previously passed the legislation in November 2013. On June 10, 2014, the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services (HHS), Education, and Related Services approved their spending bill which included a recommended $265 million for CHGME in the bill, the same level of funding as in FY14.

The committee’s bill also allocated $30.46 billion to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) which reflects an increase of $600 million from FY 14. These dollars fund biomedical research at the 27 institutes and centers which comprise the NIH.
