Gastrostomy/Jejunostomy Tubes

  • Place 10 fr Foley into stoma as soon as possible. Do not inflate balloon. If unable to place foley, expedite room placement.
  • Make patient NPO.
1 Critical 2 Acute 3 Urgent 4 Urgent 5 Non-Urgent
  • Tube out – unable to place Foley in triage
  • Concern for obstruction:
    • Abdominal distension
    • Vomiting
  • Tube out – Foley placed in triage
  • Tube malfunction:
    • Leaking
    • Clogged
  • Concern for infection:
    • Erythema, exudate at site

GI Bleeding

1 Critical 2 Acute 3 Urgent 4 Urgent 5 Non-Urgent
  • Active GI Bleeding with hemodynamic compromise
  • Concern for GI bleeding with:
    • Tachycardia
    • Pallor
    • Liver disease
    • Transplant
    • Hematologic disorder
    • IBD
  • Blood streaked emesis w/o other comorbidities
  • Blood streaked stool

Hernia

1 Critical 2 Acute 3 Urgent 4 Urgent 5 Non-Urgent
  • Hernia not reducible
  • Concern for obstruction:
    • Vomiting
    • Abdominal distension
    • Irritability
    • Hernia tender
  • New inguinal hernia
  • Reducible inguinal hernia
  • Reducible umbilical hernia

Immune System, Altered

Immunocompromised patients should be placed in protective isolation upon arrival to ED, then triaged.

  • Fever, or hx: fever ≥ 38°C (100.4°F)
  • Malfunctioning central line
  • Varicella exposure
