Blood Sugar Stability in Individuals with Hyperinsulinism

Description
The purpose of the study is toevaluate blood sugar levels and beta-cell function in adolescents and adult with KATP hyperinsulinism whom did not undergo pancreatectomy. We will perform oral glucose tolerance tests, glucose potentiated arginine tests, and evaluate blood sugars in home environment by using continuous glucose monitoring for 10 days.
Eligibility and criteria
What to expect
Visit 1- Screening. This will involve medical record review, interview, physical exam, a blood draw, and pregnancy test if applicable. A continuous glucose monitor will be placed during this visit. Expected duration of 1 hour.Â
Visit 2- Oral glucose tolerance test. This will involve IV placement and an oral glucose tolerance test where glucose drink is ingested and blood samples will be taken at regular time points. Expected duration of 5 hours. The visit will be in the morning and you will be asked to fast (i.e., not eat any food) starting the night prior.
Visit 3- Glucose potentiated arginine test. This will involve IV placement and a GPA test where a arginine is infused as well as sugar containing IV fluids and blood samples will be taken at regular time points. Expected duration of 5 hours. The visit will be in the morning and you will be asked to fast (i.e., not eat any food) starting the night prior.
