If your child suffers from significant constipation, he may need to receive a bowel clean out, also known as a nasogastric laxative cleanout. This may be performed as a treatment or as preparation for a colonoscopy to diagnose other gastrointestinal issues. The most commonly used laxative is called GoLYTELY® (polyethylene glycolelectrolyte solution).
In this procedure, a nasogastric tube is inserted into your child’s nose and advanced into the stomach. An infusion of a laxative liquid is administered via the tube. The liquid goes rapidly through your child’s gastrointestinal tract and cleans it out.
This intervention is only available at CHOP’s Main Campus.
