Paracentesis for Chronic Liver Conditions

Paracentesis involves inserting a need through your child's skin to remove abdominal fluid that accumulates in children with chronic liver conditions.

Under sterile conditions and mild sedation, a doctor inserts a needle through your child’s skin on the lower abdomen. A small plastic straw is inserted and abdominal fluid is slowly drained over a few hours. Once complete, the straw is removed.

This test is only available at CHOP’s Main Campus.
