Why Choose CHOP for HI Treatment
Vast experience
The Congenital Hyperinsulinism Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) was established in 1998, the first center of its kind in the United States. We have treated more than 1,600 children with congenital HI and performed more than 600 pancreatectomies making our center the largest and most active HI center in the world. Our HI Center has been named a Center of Excellence by Congenital Hyperinsulinism International.

Multidisciplinary team
Our multidisciplinary team of experts includes pediatric endocrinologists, surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, anesthesiologists, psychologists, geneticists, nurses, social workers, researchers, genetics counselors, speech and feeding therapists, and dieticians — all working together to provide specialized, patient-centered and seamless care for children with congenital HI and their families.
Groundbreaking research
Since 2004, and under a Food and Drug Administration protocol, we have been performing the 18F-DOPA PET scan to identify focal HI lesions for the surgeons to remove. We have performed more than 430 18F-DOPA PET scans, by far the most of any institution in the world. This is only part of the innovative research being performed at CHOP.
Compassionate, family-centered care
Each patient and family we care for is unique. We aim to tailor our care to each child. We encourage parents to actively participate in their child’s treatment and decision-making process.
Nationally ranked excellence
The HI Center is part of CHOP's Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes, which has been consistently ranked among the very best places for endocrine care by U.S. News & World Report.
