Why choose us for your child's kidney transplant

Our transplant team has the experience and skill to care for children with many different causes of kidney failure. CHOP’s involvement with the National Kidney Registry (NKR) increases access to well-matched living donors, which many other programs do not offer.

Join us at the Philadelphia Zoo to commemorate the remarkable milestone of CHOP’s 500th Kidney Transplant!

What to expect: A guide for patients and families

We have developed a packet for patients and families to learn about important topics, including the transplant evaluation process, waiting for a transplant, the transplant surgery, post-transplant care and life after transplant.

How the transplant waitlist works

If your child is found to be a good candidate for a kidney transplant and you decide you would like to pursue a deceased donor transplant, your child will be placed on the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) kidney transplant donor waitlist.

Living donor kidney transplant

If your child needs a kidney transplant, there are a number of advantages to having a live kidney donation — one that comes from a living person. Primarily, the wait time for the transplant is much shorter.
