Background

Robert N. Baldassano, MD, is a board-certified pediatric gastroenterologist and co-director of the Center for Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He specializes in diagnosing and treating children with Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, and is actively researching new treatments for these gastrointestinal disorders.

Dr. Baldassano became a doctor and chose gastroenterology as a specialty for a very personal reason: He has Crohn’s disease. “I was in my 20s and working as a systems analyst when I was diagnosed. I felt drawn to medicine as a career. I thought maybe I’d be able to help create new therapies or cures that could help others, as well as myself.”

His philosophy of care is simple: “Every child deserves a perfect life. I try to make that happen.”

Because of his own 30-year battle with Crohn’s disease, Dr. Baldassano understands the challenges of symptom flare-ups, repeated endoscopies, and frequent hospitalizations.

“I guess I have empathy for my patients. I’ve lived their lives,” Dr. Baldassano says. “I understand their struggles and I’m working to improve treatment for all.”

Education and experience

Dr. Baldassano earned his bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany, and his medical degree from the College of Medicine at SUNY Health Science Center in Brooklyn, NY. He completed his pediatric residency training at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, then served two-year terms as a clinical fellow, then a research fellow in gastroenterology at CHOP.

After his intensive training, Dr. Baldassano worked at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA, for several years. In 1996, he returned to CHOP as a senior pediatric gastroenterologist and director of CHOP’s Center for Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

Since then, Dr. Baldassano has continued his clinical and research work with children who have inflammatory bowel diseases. He served as associate medical director of CHOP’s Clinical Research Institute for five years.

Currently, Dr. Baldassano also holds the titles of Colman Family Chair in Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease, medical director of the CHOP Specialty Care Center in Abington, PA, and co-director of the Penn/CHOP Microbiome Program.

Dr. Baldassano is actively involved in numerous professional and scientific societies including the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America, the American Gastroenterological Association and the IBD Family Research Council. He has published hundreds of papers, presented at regional, national and international meetings, and received dozens of awards.

Research

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Baldassano oversees a large team of researchers at CHOP. The team has more than 30 ongoing studies. Doctors and scientists are working together to translate discoveries in the laboratory into direct patient care for children.

One promising area of current research is investigating the intestinal microbiomes of children with inflammatory bowel diseases.

“Intestinal diseases are driven by the organisms that live inside us, and our diet — what we eat — greatly influences that,” Dr. Baldassano said. “We’re studying how diet changes can alter an individual’s microbiome so that it promotes health, instead of disease.”
